Richard (Dick) Schmalensee is a distinguished economist and professor emeritus at MIT. He served as the John C Head III Dean of the MIT Sloan School of Management from 1998 to 2007 and is currently the Howard W. Johnson Professor of Management and Economics, Emeritus at MIT. Schmalensee is renowned for his expertise in industrial organization economics and its application to managerial and public policy issues, particularly in antitrust, regulatory, and environmental policy.
Throughout his career, Schmalensee has made significant contributions to academia, government, and industry. He was a member of the President’s Council of Economic Advisers from 1989 to 1991 and has served as a consultant to various government agencies and private corporations. His prolific work includes authoring or co-authoring 11 books and over 120 published articles.
Schmalensee’s expertise is widely recognized, as evidenced by his numerous accolades and appointments. He is a Fellow of the Econometric Society and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and was named the 2012 Distinguished Fellow of the Industrial Organization Society. Currently, he serves as a Director of the National Bureau of Economic Research and is Chairman Emeritus of the Board of Directors of Resources for the Future.
